What a personal assistant actually is

A chatbot answers a question and stops. A personal assistant keeps a memory of what you like, where you are, and what you always refuse, then takes a step in the world: books, orders, routes, drafts, pays. That is why owners should care, because the buyer who used to scan ten blue links now hands the shortlist to software and waits for a yes. Muse is Meta's personal AI agent. It launched in the US on September 8, 2026 on iOS, Android, the web at muse.ai, and WhatsApp. Meta's launch post is the primary source. Muse runs on a dedicated cloud virtual machine with its own browser, so it keeps working after the buyer closes the app. A free tier covers most of what people need. Paid tiers sit at $20 and $100 a month for heavier use. Launch connections reported with the rollout include Gmail, OpenTable, Ticketmaster, Spotify, and Shopify. Reuters noted Meta modeled the architecture on OpenClaw.

This is the most consequential product for a local shop, because it is free, it lives inside WhatsApp, and it can book a restaurant. If an out-of-town buyer would ask a phone to finish a job at your place, Muse is already in that moment. US adults on those apps have it today, and it can already finish travel, dining, email, and purchases once they say yes. It launched. It is live.

Grok Bot (xAI)

Grok Bot launched August 11, 2026 as a teammate with its own computer in the cloud. It signs into tools and apps, keeps working after the laptop closes, and comes back when it needs a yes. It is in beta for SuperGrok and Cursor plans, on desktop and iOS, with a product page at x.ai/bot. The @grok chatbot on X is a different product. Grok Bot is the one that finishes work in the actual tool.

Paying SuperGrok and Cursor users have it today, plus enterprise, which means a smaller slice of your buyers and a more serious one. It can already finish multi-step work across apps, inboxes, and sites with no clean API (application programming interface). The stage is beta, and it is expanding. For a local owner, treat it as the high-end cousin of Muse: fewer of your buyers have it, and the ones who do will hand it a job and walk away.

OpenClaw

OpenClaw is an open-source personal assistant created by Peter Steinberger. It runs on the buyer's own machine and answers through chat apps they already use: WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, Slack, and more. It is model-agnostic, so they bring their own key. The project is stewarded by the OpenClaw Foundation. Some secondary write-ups credit it to Microsoft. Link the GitHub repo. Stars are in the hundreds of thousands.

Technical buyers who want the assistant on their hardware have it today, which means a serious slice of people now run something that lives on their machine and can act. It can finish whatever the connected chat app and the chosen model can act on. The project is shipping as open source, with no paid tier from the project itself.

ChatGPT and Gemini

These are the assistants most buyers already have. ChatGPT and Gemini still spend most of their time answering who to hire, who is open, who is closest, so your name in that paragraph still matters while the buyer decides. Both companies have also shipped agent features that take steps, with a human yes on money and messages. Treat the installed base as the shortlist engine, and treat Muse-class tools as the booking engine. A shop that is messy in public gets skipped for the competitor with cleaner hours.

Apple describes a conversational assistant with personal context, onscreen awareness, and more systemwide app actions. The company's own example includes finding "the best local coffee spot in a new city." Users can already take action in apps they use, such as texting in WhatsApp. Broader third-party actions are described as coming soon.

Apple Intelligence-enabled devices have it today, in beta, English first, which is how it will sit in the pocket of buyers who never install Muse. It can already finish system actions, onscreen tasks, and some third-party app actions. App Intents are how a shop's own app, if it has one, talks to Siri. Most local shops will still be read from the public web and Maps, the same as everyone else.

Hermes and local models

Hermes is an open-weight model family. I use local models for cheap work on owned hardware. A model is the engine. An assistant is the product that remembers you and acts. Vendors blur that on purpose, because "we run Hermes" sounds like "we shipped Muse." If someone sells you a local model as if your customers were already using it to book you, ask who the buyer is this month and where the product page lives.
