SEO, AEO, GEO, DEO: Which Marketing Acronyms Deserve Your Money

A new word is a different thing from a new behavior, which is why you should run four questions before you pay. SEO (search engine optimization) still funds clicks, GEO (generative engine optimization) still gets you named, and DEO (decision engine optimization) passes because an assistant that books is a new behavior, and the work still pays if the word dies.

Four labels. One question: is there a new behavior underneath.

Article Summary

Being right is rarely popular

The authors who rejected "e-publishing" were defending a feeling that still holds. Print matters. People still want a physical book. Print-on-demand sits inside the print economy, so it counts in the print share, which keeps the digital number honest.

The Association of American Publishers StatShot for calendar year 2025, released August 10, 2026, still shows the mix moving. Digital formats were 21.5% of US trade publishing revenue. Print formats were 76.3% of trade. Across all US publishing, digital was 14.2%. Digital audio grew 5.3% in 2025 to $2.5 billion. The word "e-publishing" is gone. The delivery model stayed.

I spent three years on a weekly Tulsa radio show telling local owners the yellow pages book was dead. They believed the ad they had always bought, and they believed me after stories surfaced about books printed and driven straight to dumpsters to satisfy a print contract. I used them for kindling. In one shop I turned the ad into a coupon and required the stores to collect them. Cost per acquisition landed in the hundreds. The word on the invoice was still "yellow pages" while the behavior had already left.

Being right is rarely popular. I am skeptical when a lone wolf names a discipline, and in a few cases the ladder under the word is still right. The test below is how you tell those cases from a slide.

A new word is a different thing from a new behavior.

The four questions

Owners need a test they can run without me, because a fresh acronym makes last year's audit look new. I used this test on WebMCP (Web Model Context Protocol) and said yes, with a narrow job: conversion while the customer still watches the page. Use it on the next word that hits your timeline.

  1. Is there a new behavior, or only a new label on an old one?
  2. Can you name a real buyer doing it this month?
  3. Is there a primary source, or only a press release and a course?
  4. Does the work it asks for still pay if the word dies?
PRO TIP Run the four questions out loud. A word that fails question one is a sticker. A word that fails question three is a press release.

Score the acronyms out loud

This is the table people will screenshot, so the jobs come first and the labels come second. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the one-line spoken answer. SXO (search experience optimization) is the owned page after the pick.

James Dooley named DEO in a paid press release, and that is worth saying in the same breath as the verdict. Question three still matters. The behavior underneath has product pages: Meta's Muse, OpenClaw, xAI's Grok Bot, Apple's Siri AI, which is how it clears question two. The operator playbook is Being Chosen Beats Being Visible. The product landscape is Will Your Customers Use a Personal AI Assistant to Find You?.

PRO TIP If the work still pays when you delete the acronym from the slide, it is real work. If the slide dies without the word, you bought a sticker.

The label can change. The test cannot.

If the industry ends up calling it something else next year, run the same four questions on the new word. I used them on WebMCP and on DEO. Growth hacker failed. The receipts above are why I trust the test more than the coinage.

FAQ

What is DEO?

DEO, decision engine optimisation, is when an assistant shortlists options, picks one that matches the buyer's constraints, and takes the next step: book, order, reserve, call, or route. James Dooley coined it in a paid AB Newswire release on September 3, 2026. The label is optional. The job is getting booked.

Is GEO real?

Yes. GEO is being named and cited inside a written recommendation from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Copilot. The buyer still decides. It is a real behavior with a real job. The citation is the win at that layer.

How do I know if a new marketing acronym is worth my money?

Run four questions. Is there a new behavior, or only a new label. Can you name a real buyer doing it this month. Is there a primary source, or only a press release and a course. Does the work still pay if the word dies. Growth hacker fails the first question. DEO passes because an assistant that books is a new behavior, Muse is already shipping it, and the work still pays if nobody says DEO again.
